Who Are the Volunteers in Volunteers of America?
When Volunteers of America was founded in 1896, people thought of volunteers as individuals who served full time in the military of their own free will, dedicated to serving others.
Our founders, Maud and Ballington Booth, and early organization members came to call themselves Volunteers of America because they volunteered their whole lives, hearts, spirits and professional prosperity to helping people – whenever and wherever needed.
Today, Volunteers of America touches the lives of 2 million people in over 400 communities in the United States through programs staffed by full-time, paid professionals who’ve adopted as their mission our founders’ ideal of a ministry of service.
Yet we still depend on an army of modern-day “volunteers,” some of whom offer their free time and numerous talents to help where needed in Volunteers of America’s senior living and care communities and health care programs nationwide. In addition, Volunteers of America’s 35 local offices across the United States partner with hundreds of organizations and volunteer centers, offering the potential for even more volunteer opportunities you can explore here.
